Past Continuous / Αόριστος Διαρκείας.

Χρησιμοποιούμε τον Past Continuous

1. Για μια πράξη που συνέβαινε σε μια συγκεκραμένη χρονική στιγμή στο παρελθόν.
e.g. I was watching TV at ten o’ clock last night.
He wasn’t doing his homework when I called him.

2. Για δυο ή περισσότερες πράξεις που συνέβαιναν ταυτόχρονα στο παρελθόν.
e.g. While Mum was cooking Dad was reading his newspaper.

3. Για να περιγράψουμε το σκηνικό μιας ιστορίας.
e.g. It was raining hard and the wind was blowing.

4.Για μια πράξη που συνέβαινε στο παρελθόν και διακόπτεται από μια άλλη πράξη.
e.g. While he was running out of the house he slipped on a banana skin and fell to the ground. (banana skin= μπανανόφλουδα)

1. Was Dad reading his newspaper all evening?
2. It was raining all night long.
3. Mum was making bread all morning.
4. They weren’t living in Athens last year.
5. When I saw her she was crossing the street.
6. While Dad was washing the car Mum was doing the housework.
7. What were they doing when the aeroplane crashed? - They were working in the garden.
8. What was Helen doing when you called her?
9. Peter was listening to his new CD when the lights went out.
10. I wasn’t sleeping at six o’clock in the morning.

O Past Simple / Απλός Αόριστος χρησιμοποιείται:

Για πράξεις που άρχισαν και τελείωσαν στο παρελθόν.
1. They found her near the river yesterday afternoon.
2. Did you visit your parents last week?

Για να περιγράψουμε μια σειρά πράξεων στο παρελθόν.
1. He sat down, opened his lunch box, took out his sandwich and started to eat.
2. He opened the door, took off his coat and went straight to his desk.

Για πράξεις που επαναλαμβάνονταν συχνά ή ήταν συνήθειες του παρελθόντος.
( αντί για  used to... )
1. When I was ten years old I played football almost every afternoon.
( When I was ten years old I used to play football almost every afternoon )
2. Thirty years ago people made their own bread.
( Thirty years ago people used to make their own bread. )

Time expressions with the PAST SIMPLE

1. yesterday
2. last Sunday/week/month/summer/year
3. in 1997
4. in my youth = στα νιάτα μου
5. when I was five years old
6. the other day = τις προάλλες
 7. the day before yesterday = προχθές
8. ago

Χρησιμοποιούμε το βοηθητικό ρήμα -did-για τον Απλό Αόριστο.
e.g. Did she play chess yesterday? - No, she didn’t.

Last week, my parents decided to take my brother and me for a day out. We woke up early on Saturday morning. It was a warm, sunny day. Mum made some sandwiches and we got into the car at half past nine.

One hour later, we were in the forest. There were beautiful flowers everywhere and the birds were singing. There were some clouds and Mum said, “We haven’t brought an umbrella, but it hasn’t rained for weeks.  ”We got out of the car and went for a walk. Suddenly I heard a loud noise. I looked up at the sky. It wasn’t blue anymore and the sun wasn’t shining. It was cloudy. “Look at those clouds. There’s going to be a storm!” my brother said. It started raining and we ran to the car. We were all wet and cold.

On our way home, the sun came out again. There weren’t many clouds in the sky. “Look! There’s a rainbow, “Mum said. “I’ve never seen a huge rainbow like that, “my brother said. We stopped the car near a lake and had a picnic before we went home. It was a great day!
